basenjis in Africa and the first imports to England

Apparently the basenji was given to Queen Victoria in 1843 by Captain Wemyss who brought the
basenji back from the Niger expedition in 1842

1923
While living in Khartoum Lady Helen Nutting acquired six Basenjis from natives west of Meridid, beyond the
Bahr-el-Ghazal region of the Nile and between the rivers Ibba and Sueh from South Sudan

When she returned to Great Britain these dogs come along on board the Ship
They arrive in good health in Great Britain and everything is done for their welfare but it ends in tragedy when they
all die from the after-effects of distemper injections which were quite new at the time

During Mrs. Burn first trip, in 1929, to the Belgian Congo to visit her husband she fell in love with the native hunting dog and kept several as pets in the bungalow.
In 1930 Mrs. Burn returned to England, bringing with her five chestnut Basenjis.
They were placed in quarantine. Mrs Burn feared that, being non-European dogs, perhaps without natural immunity, they needed to be inoculated against distemper.
At the time, the Ministry of Agriculture prohibited the use of live vaccine, only dead vaccine could be used. This vaccine only conferred protection for six months.
Within eleven days after inoculation, first one, then two more eleven days after the first and finally a fourth, all came down with a virulent form of distemper.

(bred by Kisumbu (Chief of Bipanga) from Nzuli ex Tsitsi)
For three years, she was a much-loved pet. In the spring of 1933, Mrs. Burn returned from the Congo with a mate for her. Mrs. Burn had managed to persuade a chief of the Feshis
to part with a male dog named Kiluba. After coming out of quarantine in November of 1933, he was mated with her. Unfortunately, she died three weeks later from septicemia caused by an
internal tear that occurred during the mating.

Mrs. Burn returned to the Congo and in 1936 brought out a dog, Bongo, and two bitches, Bokoto and Bereke. These three became the first founders of the breed.
While she was in the Congo, Kiluba had been left at a boarding kennel. When Mrs. Burn came back from the Congo, he did not seem to be feeling well and soon died.
A postmortem revealed an ulcer, which was possibly caused by a fish bone.

During World War II, several basenji breeders - including VTW, Olivia Burn, L.R. Bishop, Mrs A. Lait, Miss E.M. Gardner,
Mrs E.M. Lister-Empson, Mr W.J. Kent, Mrs K. Sheppard, Mrs F. Roberts, Miss E.S.B. Barnaby, and before the war was over Delia Williams and
Diane Berry were breeding - kept the breed even though the Ministry of Home Security published a letter (dated 12 July 1940)
detailing the compulsory destruction of all dogs.

Delia bred back as far as 1943. She used Pilon Tit Willow and some Ousefleets as foundation stock and put her affix on Pilon D’Artagnon - (Antefaa) Pilon D’Artagnan.
This is why I put aterations made on registration in brackets – so you can tell who the original breeder is (was !) Her first litters appeared in 1946.

I have a complete set of KC registration books (Basenji pages) which formed the bases for my data. Veronica would have registered all her litters – back in those does you could register
one puppy at a time, instead of the entire litter as now. So the books have a litter spread over months until all the pups are registered.

Time out of mind, Veronica bought in dogs and put ‘of the Congo’ on them. Our own Lovebird of the Congo, born 1982
I think, was actually bred by Mr s. Guest. Sire was ‘Ozzie’ – GB/AUS Ch Afrika Royal Challenge of the Congo – she added her affix when she imported him.
