Some info on the early basenjis
Gwen was in Illinois (nor was she in Ohio as reprted in an article about
 20 years ago). She lived in Polo (small town) when I first knew her,
 then moved to South Elgin. Christa was her oldest daughter from an
 earlier marriage, and just a few years younger than I am.
 Sometime around 1960, Gwen saw a photo of a black and white South
 African dog. I think he had just finished his KUSA championship. After
 many letters (pre-Internet, of course) she finally corresponded with
 Bert Blewett in South Africa. Durban, I think. Black was in our (U.S.)
 Standard but we'd never had any. She approached AKC on that basis and
 they agreed (later reneged) to register the dogs; they did not accept
 KUSA pedigrees at that time. I doubt they would have accepted Elspet's
 Rhodesian pedigrees but that became a non-issue.

 During all this, Bert Blewett asked if Elspet could be included. In
 1963, Gwen had a litter of pups and sent two of the bitches to Africa -
 Coptokin Copper Boutique to Bert, Coptokin Copper Beautique to Elspet.
 The agreement at that time was that they'd be bred to black and whites
 and the black pups sent to Gwen.

 Bert Blewett sent five black and whites - Coptokin Atlantic of the
 Senjies (Paris) and his four sisters, Amerique, Africana (never bred)
 and I'm drawing a blank on the other two.

 While AKC had agreed to register them, it changed its mind. You can
 imagine Gwen's reaction. AKC finally agreed to register five litters,
 one from each import. This was changed to two from Paris (the male)
 and none from Africana. The three bitches went to Bill and Carolyn Ring,
 John and Pat Loukota, all in Illinois, and the Gontareks in Texas. Not
 sure what happened to Africana.

Meanwhile Elspet had moved to England with Beautique in whelp. Her pups
 were born in quarantine. Three blacks and, I think, a red. They modified
 their agreement so that Elspet sent two - English registered - to Gwen
 and kept a bitch to be bred to Littlebreach Lubilash (I"m forgetting
 NAMES!!!). Lograk Lubilash of Littlebreach! That later litter was
 imported but AKC refused to register them so they were sold with their
 English registration papers to pet homes.
